MIKE MARSHALL sings & plays BLUEGRASS
Three-time Grammy Nominee Mike Marshall is one of most accomplished and string instrumentalists in the world today. Mike is from the Southern part of America and was steeped in traditional music as a teenager.
His performance in Cologne will be a return to his music roots, featuring Mike singing much of the traditional music which he grew up on while playing guitar, mandolin, mandocello, banjo and fiddle.
In 1978, Mike was snatched up by the leading acoustic music group of the time, the David Grisman Quintet. The group recorded and toured with jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli, guitarist Tony Rice, violinist Darol Anger, and guitarist/violinist Mark O’Connor.
During the 80s and 90s Mike created some of the most adventurous new acoustic music in America with his ensembles The Montreux Band, Psychograss, New Grange, The Big Trio, The Modern Mandolin Quartet and recorded for the Rounder, Sugar Hill and Windham Hill labels. All of these groups toured throughout Europe, the USA and Japan.
Mike has recorded two Grammy nominated CDs for the Sony Classical label with bassist Edgar Meyer, violinist Joshua Bell, mandolinist Sam Bush and banjo wiz Bela Fleck.
Starting in 1995 Marshall helped spearhead global interest in Brazilian Choro music through his recordings with his group Choro Famoso and with mandolinist Hamilton de Holanda and pianist Jovino Santos Neto as well as his educational publications and record company Adventure Music. Mike also released two CDs with his mandolin playing pal Chris Thile on the Sugar Hill label.
Mike currently lives part time in Wuppertal, Germany and Oakland, California with his wife, German classical mandolinist Caterina Lichtenberg. They have three CDs together, tour as a duo and produce mandolin workshops around the world. These two married mandolin monsters continue to push the boundaries of their instrument, forming a bridge between their respective Bluegrass and Classical music worlds.
Mike has recently completed the life-long goal of recording the complete set of Six Bach Cello Suites on his Monteleone Mandocello. Available on his Bandcamp page at:
